The Frog Skin that Saved 50 Million Lives

Each year the Golden Goose Award recognizes three teams of researchers whose silly, odd, or obscure sounding U.S. federally funded research has returned serious benefits to society.

2019 awardee David Sachar, MD, used frog skin to simulate the parts of the human digestive system that were most impacted by cholera. In an unlikely turn of events, his research using frog skin would save millions of lives. He and his colleagues would prove that a simple sugar/salt solution could be a cheap, effective treatment for the intractable illness.
